Dealing with complaints

Guidelines on the visual assessment of cabinet making and joinery

In addition to design and function, the surface is usually the first aspect to be subjected to intense scrutiny by the end customer. A broad field for discussion between client and executing company. The perception of a surface finish is rather subjective from the point of view of both parties.

How relevant are the assessment of scratches in the lacquer or colour deviations in the surface? We too are frequently approached for an expert opinion when it comes to complaints about surface finish.

At this point we refer to the publication “The visual assessment of cabinet making and joinery”. This is published by Tischler - Schreiner Deutschland (TSD – the guild organisation of the carpentry and joinery trade in Germany).

It defines the viewing distance and light ratio under which a surface, the veneer pattern, the edge profile, etc. should be assessed.

The trade magazine dds already reported and provided detailed information on the guideline in anonline articlein 2017.
